Link to a command in Formview from outside the formview itself

Hi, I've got a formview with edit and insert templates.
The formview get's populated initially via a query string with a pageID e.g. editpage.aspx?pageid={0}
I can add a button to add a new page - e.g. insert, within the formview template, with a button with the command="new"
However, I want to be able to link from outside the formview to make a new page- but because the button is outside of the formview the command="new"  property doesn't work...


In addition, I would like to be able to have a link on another page of - 'add a new page' which sends the user to the edit-page page with the formview on, and the formview would show it's insert item template.

Any ideas
