textbox focus on page_load

hi all,
 I need to set focus on a textbox on page_load.  I've tried all the methods available to me such as javascript, the .focus method, setting  the defaultfocus property on the form tag, and a host of other things but none seem to work.  Its on a login form using Forms Authentication.  any clues to what I might be able to do?
