how String concatenation works?

Hi,
suppose x=3,y=4

Response.Write(x.ToString + " " + y.ToString)
This gave correct as i thought: 3  4


But this gave unexpected result, so what's the rule behind string concatenation and conversion?
Response.Write(x.ToString + " " + y).
This gave :7.
Why could'nt 'y' here got converted to string ? why arithimatic sum happend here?
