onclick event in to trigger sql

hey guys i need ur help.

So i have a td which have an onclick event. like )" --- that is when a user clicks on a row which contains team names i want to capture the teamid of the row they click on. Hope i clear so far.

Now what i want happen is wen the user clicks on a dept. name i want the team id of it and then run a sql query using this team id. then so the various data i pull out in another table.

I'm wondering how can i do this sql query cus what i have been reading is that u can't run a sql in javascript.
Please give me some ideas...
