A bit of a strange problem, two separate ones actually. Safari and chrome log ins used to work fine, until I put the log in into an update panel. Once that was done, log in worked, but the panel did not update, so you had to reload the site to see you were actually logged in.

I used the solution in the second post. This solved the problem and in chrome (which apparently is similar to safari in this way) login now works very nice. However, in safari, log in does not work at all now. It recognizes wrong passwords, hence is obviously querying the database. But it is not allowing a log in.
This is similar to what I have seen with high privacy settings in IE. They do the exact same thing (and we still have this problem, like other sites i have seen do too). Somehow the js script patch for the update panels must mess with safaris privacy settings perhaps?
