MembershipProvider and Machine.config

I am implementing a custom membership provider and would like to store the definition of the Membership section in Machine.config for easier implementation by other developers.
My question is this:

Can a developer override specific attributes of the MembershipProvider definition in Web.config without having to override all of them?

Specifically I would like to allow the developer to specifiy connectionStringName and applicationName in Web.config but still use everything else in Machine.config.

Is that possible?
