ASP.NET validation controls and Javascript

Hi everyone,


I need some help understanding the terms HTML controls, ASP.NET controls, server controls and client side validation.


I thought so far that scripting languages like Javascript are used to perform functions like required field validation, range checking etc.
But I learnt now that we have a set of validation controls in the toolbox that can be used and that ASP.NET automatically generates client side code for these controls for checks to be done in the browser.
Can anybody please explain to me some other scenarios where we might need to write client side scripting code?
