Learn SQL at home. Do I need a Server? What else do I need?

Hi all,
we use Microsoft SSMS SQLServer 2008 R2 at work and I have to be able to use it in 4 weeks, in a new department.
But I have no possibility to learn it at work, at my current department.
 
So I want to learn SQL at home and maybe install the same Software i mentioned above in my PC/ Notebook.
What do I need to prepare, so that I can learn SQL at home? I heard, I'll be needing a Server as a Database?
How can I create a DB-Server? Host it? Or is there any (virtual) Server that I can install in my PC/ Notebook at home?
I am a real beginner at this area. I have tried using search to find a thread about this, but no results.
