WebControl Pulled From Cache Not Firing Events

I need to dynamically create some WebControls based on database data.  The database hit is a little expensive so my thought was to add the controls to cache because I only really need to refresh about every 10 minutes.
For rendering the controls this works great.  The problem is that the controls need to fire an event.  This doesn't seem to work if I pull the controls from cache on the PostBack.  If I hit the database every time to create the controls I am able to fire the event on PostBack.
 Is there some way to make this work?  Sure seems like it should work.
