Finding the controls within a placeholder

I have a page that I am implementing a drag and drop interface using Javascript, I get to the point where I want to drop the items that are programatically generated into a placeholder and I want to find all of the controls within this and then update the database. Is there a way of saying for example in pseudocode...

For all controls within placeholder
loop
update order / information
end loop
