Display data without databound control

I may be working in the wrong direction here. If so please advise accordingly. Suppose we want to display and manage data without using one of the databound controls (formview,dataview, etc). I am guessing we would ceate a datareader and somehow set a controls's value property to a field in the datareader. Something like this:
