dim var as chkvar.selectedvalue gives an error when no item is selected

How do I code so that  it is acceptable that no items are checked on a checkboxlist?  I have list of various items.  If no items are selected, I'd like to give the checkbox list a value of "-1" (or something like that).  If one if selected, I want that value.  If more than one is selected, I want the values of them all.
I've found some code to concatenate multiple items (though if there's a setting to make it see them all to start with with no extra code, that'd be preferable), so I'm not too worried about that.  But I need to be able to have a checkboxlist with no items selected.  Is there a way to check and see if the checkboxlist has no items selected?  If I can get that, then I can do the rest.
