user authentication

I'm pretty new to MVC and using our need for an intranet site to learn.  First piece being user authentication and role retrieval from sql server db.   By default there is a lot that comes with the default MVC app with registering new users and password changes.  I've done quite a few searches to find a simple example for what I'm looking for but a little new to this side of things.


I'd appreciate any basic steps or links to authenticate users against a sql server db and retrieve their job roles.
