inserting br tags

Hi,
I am using a textarea to enter some description to a table. when i am inserting data i wanted to add new line characters to a table when I hit enter in the text area. so i will be able to dsiplay the data with new lines. and also i wanted to remove displaying the br tag when i edit the contents of text area(I fetch the data from table to textarea when in edit mode). how can I do this?? any help??
