Cannot get Createwizard validation to fire

I cannot get CreateWizard Validation to fire for UserName, password to fire.  When entering data each validation error message displays but when the CreateUserButton is clicked the data good or bad is written into the membershipdb.  I converted the Login module to a template.  Can I call the validation in the C# code behind in for the UnamedCreateUser event?  Is the information written to the membershipdb before the code behind envent is executed?
