Intranet to Internet - image problem

I have an intranet application which needs to be moved on to the internet. One of the pages uses an internal web application to retrieve images from it and display on the webpage. This webapplication cannot be made public on the internet. Is there a way I can retrieve this url and display the image returned from it on the internet?
