Username Does Not Appear In Verification Email

I have a page that creates a new user and sends out a verification email to the new user.  Everything works great, except the Username does not appear in the email body.  I have tested the Username being sent to the body, using a Label and it works, but it is not being passed to the email body.  Please assist.
