Creating a custom control

i want to create a control form my asp.net application; the control must consist of a text box and an image box with IValidators interface implementatio to access the IsValid property. From wich base class should i inherit? if i try UserControl i get a null reference instance when i try to access my textbox or image controls ive placed in my .ascx file.
