I am sorry for this rather basic and conceptual question, but after some searches I did not get a satisfactory answer (besides http://forums.asp.net/t/1054217.aspx).
Let's assume I have a table with 2 columns (user and password) and I do not need anything else but authenticate users (so no change password, not roles nor profiles, etc.) - in fact I have a common database, across all web apps,  where I keep users credentials - a kind of SSO.
Is there any good reason to override a Membership Provider rather than using the OnAuthenticate from asp:Login on the web app?
For the SSO app it is obvious but what about for web apps that use those credencials?

I tried both methods and, of course; both worked OK, but I do not know if there is any good practice for authentications methods.
Thank you,
