TextBox for date input

I have a textbox which takes in date values and in ShortDateString and insert into SQL 2005 in SmallDataTime format. How can I write some validation so that if the value input is not of my required format dd/MM/yyyy, it will prompt user with a customized error box instead of being redirected to some asp.net error page?
