Why is 'this' read only?

I have a class called CustomerBO. In that class I call a method called GetItem that returns a CustomerBO.  I was hoping to be able to do something like:
this = CustomerBOManager.GetItem(id);
Unfortunately I got a compile error stating that 'this' was read only?  Can someone explain to me this doesn't work?
