Windows OS is mostly divided into two partitions namely FAT (File Allocation Table) and NTFS (New Technology File System). It can be divided into more than two partitions of either FAT or NTFS or both. So, in case of sudden deletion of files, logical error, virus intrusion, system crash, OS corruption, the partitions go missing, deleted.

To recover the partitions is not an easy task, but with an apt: http://mail2web.com/plugins/addons/outlook/backups-archiving/efficient-windows-data-recovery_2074.html it is possible.
