dofollow
rel="dofollow" link in HTML anchor tag instruct the Search engines robots to must follow the link (must visit the link page and extract information). This should be done only to trusted website.

nofollow
rel="nofollow" as you said is only helpful for real visitors where a visitor can see the link and can click to visit the page. Search engines robots will just ignore the link page and will not visit that.

Generally links of all feedback, comment by readers should have "nofollow" as you never know they are tagging some spam websites from your website. If that is the case search engines will punish you as you are sending traffic to those spammers (so you must be the part of that spam).

Hope this brief information will help.
