Hi,
SAP is one of the products which has been universally accepted and has stood the test of time. I personally know quite a few people who did SAP courses, made a career change and are doing pretty well now. So the change is doable. Some of the persons I am referring to were in their 40s - they had a good understanding of the basic business areas which they translated well to the SAP assignments. The beauty of the software industry is it is skill based - you will succeed if you possess superior skills. However, please do not expect the ride to be smooth, especially during the transition. I would suggest that first complete the entire learning and certification part on a part-time basis without leaving your current job, this itself will test your commitment levels. Start applying for jobs after completing this and see how it works out.
Skill upgradation is mandatory in software - and everyone does this in time outside of the job. This approach will also test your discipline levels and provide feedback whether you can manage learning in this fashion in the long run.
